How Becoming a Grandparent Changed My Why—and Deepened My Commitment to Health

How Becoming a Grandparent Changed My Why—and Deepened My Commitment to Health

There are moments in life that shift your perspective forever.

For me, becoming a grandmother was one of those moments.

Holding my grandchild for the first time brought a wave of joy, gratitude—and something else I didn’t expect: a renewed sense of purpose when it came to my health.

As someone who has spent decades in the world of wellness, I already understood the science of nutrition, movement, gut health, and mindset. I’d written a book on it—Is Your Lifestyle Killing You? The Eight Simple Steps to Optimal Weight Loss and Optimal Health—to empower others to reclaim their vitality.

But something about this new role, this new little life, made it all feel even more real.

I wasn’t just thinking about living longer anymore. I was thinking about living better—with strength, energy, and presence. I wanted to be the kind of grandmother who could get down on the floor to play, go for long walks, travel to new places, and model what vibrant health truly looks like.

The Gift of Perspective

Grandparenthood reminds us of what really matters: time, connection, memories made in simple moments. But it also highlights what’s at stake.

I’ve seen too many people arrive at this beautiful season of life too tired, too inflamed, or too dependent on medication to enjoy it fully. That’s why I stay fiercely committed to the lifestyle principles I teach in my book. They’re not just about weight loss—they’re about preserving freedom, joy, and the ability to show up fully for the ones we love most.

Eight Simple Steps That Keep Me Energized as a Grandparent

  1. Real, Nourishing Food – Because I want to fuel my body—not feed disease.
  2. Daily Movement – Not just to stay fit, but to stay mobile, agile, and independent.
  3. Restorative Sleep – So I wake up with the energy to keep up with a toddler’s joy.
  4. Hydration – The simplest form of self-care, often overlooked.
  5. Mindfulness & Stress Reduction – To stay calm and grounded in the chaos of life.
  6. Toxin Awareness – To protect the long-term health of my body and brain.
  7. Gut Health – Because vitality starts in the microbiome.
  8. Connection & Purpose – The true “fuel” for a meaningful life.

These steps aren’t restrictive or rigid. They’re the foundation that allows me to say yes—to playdates, adventures, and a future full of vibrant possibilities.

It’s Not Just About Me Anymore

Every choice I make now is a ripple effect.

My grandchild is watching.

My family is watching.

And I want to be an example of what healthy aging can look like—not just in theory, but in real life.

So I continue to walk the walk. I stay active, I eat well, I care for my body and my mind—not because I “have to,” but because I get to. Because there’s too much life left to live, and too many memories still to make.

There’s a poem that captures this sentiment better than I ever could. It reminds me why this stage of life feels both sacred and transformational:

To be a grandparent is to love twice—

once for your child, and once for theirs.

I used to rock your mama,

Now I rock you too—

And somehow in your laughter,

I feel young and brand new.

I’ve watched the years go quickly,

Like pages in the breeze,

But holding you here near me

Still brings me to my knees.

You call me by a special name,

One only I get to hear—

And every time you say it,

It’s music to my ear.

I don’t chase dreams the way I did,

I chase small feet instead,

And read the same book twenty times

Before we head to bed.

I’ve traded suits for story time,

Big plans for little hands—

And I wouldn’t change a single thing

That love now understands.

You think I’m the wise one,

With all the things I know,

But truth be told, it’s you, my dear,

Who’s helped my heart to grow.

So if you ever wonder

What joy looks like, it’s true—

It’s in the eyes that twinkle back

When I look down at you.

To be a grandparent is to love twice—

once for your child, and once for theirs.

Why This Matters

This isn’t just poetry—it’s a reflection of purpose.

Every healthy habit I embrace, every step I take toward longevity, is rooted in this kind of love.

Because health isn’t just about how long we live—

It’s about how well we can love those who matter most.

Your Health Is Not Just Yours—It’s a Legacy

If you’re a grandparent—or hope to be one day—know this: it’s never too late to reclaim your health. You’re not just investing in years added to your life—you’re investing in quality, energy, and the ability to show up for those you love.

That’s why I wrote Is Your Lifestyle Killing You?—to simplify the path, and give people like you a roadmap to optimal health that feels both doable and empowering.

Because this life is precious.
