The Hunger Games is such a phenomenon among young people and out of intrigue Steve and I rented the DVD this week to see the first movie . I didn’t know anything about the story line so I was able to watch the movie and interpret it my own way.
Even though it is a “fantasy thriller”, the movie really takes on some major modern social issues we face today — war, power, sacrifice, personal ethics, government power, oppression of the have-nots by the haves, and even reality television. Throughout the movie I had a constant feeling of seeing parallels between the intentional killings of young people we have experienced in the last few years and this movie’s main theme. In the movie, the annual Hunger Games is a fight to death among children designed to intimidate an impoverished public from dissenting against the all powerful Capitol. I can say that I loved the strong female protagonist and the courage and perseverance she displayed.
What concerns me most is the use of children killing children. Images have powerful effects on the brain and I am concerned that now we have a movie sensation based on one of the biggest issues we face in America today. I hope the movie can stimulate some conscious conversation about important social issues. What did you think of the movie ? I would love to hear from you.
