Your gut is your second skin and gut issues can show themselves ob your outside skin.
Skin problems can be an indication that something is wrong within your body – like toxcity, gut imbalances, hormone imbalances, food allergies, leaky gut, low thyroid function and nutrient deficiencies.
Unfortunately, most people inflame the situation by treating outside skin issues with external harsh chemicals that can create more problems on your inside skin.
Think of yourself as having an “OUTSIDE SKIN” and an “INSIDE SKIN”. Our inside skin is the lining of your digestive tract which serves an important barrier function. It’s like a net with very small holes that allows only certain substances that are small enough to go through, while keeping out larger undesirable particles
Leaky gut, (also known as increased intestinal permeability), means the net becomes damaged, resulting in bigger holes that allow more things to pass through that ordinarily couldn’t.
A result of these larger holes is the intestinal lining is not able to protect the internal environment as well. It cannot properly filter needed nutrients and other biological substances. As a consequence, some bacteria and their toxins, incompletely digested proteins and fats, and waste not normally absorbed may “leak” out of the intestines into the blood stream. This triggers an autoimmune reaction, which can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal bloating, excessive gas and cramps, fatigue, food sensitivities, joint pain, skin rashes, and autoimmunity.
A functional medicine approach to skin conditions is to look at what is happening with your SECOND SKIN as well! The digestion, absorption and utilization of nutrients inside the gut and to see if there is any leaky gut issues that may be causing chronic inflammation that is showing up on the skin.
