Life Perspectives From 30 Plus Years As A Wellness Seeker

I don’t often write about my musings on life. Usually I am teaching the  latest exciting news about health and nutrition such as the miracle of the microbiome or the science of epigenetics or the teachings of Functional Medicine. Today is different.

I just found out that a fabulously fit, amazingly healthy young man had a brain bleed while hiking and it stopped me in my tracks. How could that happen? His life is forever changed in an instant. Yes, I am sure he will make a huge recovery from his brain injury but the truth is that could happen to any of us at any time, so I wanted to muse on the notion of living in the moment.

Being a wellness seeker is about being able to live fully in the moment. Feeling clear headed and energetic and vibrant so that each moment counts. I have never said this out loud, but I think we need to bring the concept of mindfulness front and center in our health and wellness teaching.

Being a wellness seeker is NOT about deprivation now for a brighter tomorrow. Some people live this way but I recommend we change that perspective. Living for tomorrow is a missed opportunity!

Here is what I know for sure . The meaning of anything is about being fully present while you do it.

This is a big leap for me as being a competitive athlete growing up, I was always delaying gratification for the hope of a better future! Perhaps it is living longer and realizing how precious life is that has shifted my perspective.

Eating fresh, live food nourishes our body, boosts longevity, calms cravings and helps us feel energized. Eating a 100 percent raw diet is one of the most radically transforming and healing ways to eat. People with cancer, autoimmune conditions and arthritis have experienced some of the most amazing results by eating a simple, clean, raw diet. 100 percent raw is not  something I would  choose to do lifelong. My plan is to be 80%  plant based long term.

I am not trying to push my dietary ideals onto others. I am doing the 30 Day RAW challenge to take my nutritional plan to the next level in a supportive community. I will be trying new clean recipes and shopping lists as I find I get in a rut with preparing the same foods all the time. I will be exploring more recipes with whole foods and without cooking like Fresh “Pad Thai” without the meat and noodles!  Just cut, blend, mix 👌🏽 My husband will not be joining me on the challenge but he will have the benefit of trying new whole foods we have not had before. I trust my deep dive into this challenge will inspire people to live a better life.

The Path to Create Health In One Phone Call

dr-karen-relaxedYesterday I had a phone call which reminded me of why I chose the “road less traveled” in my career. (The path of creating health versus treating disease). Let me tell you about the call. I will not use names of course to protect confidentiality.

A young man had been experiencing significant daily pain for many years due to an autoimmune condition. When I heard his story, I knew that optimizing his nutrition could really support his health plan. His doctors had suggested the SCD Diet (Specific Carbohydrate Diet) which had helped him but was too restrictive to keep as a long term lifestyle. I was able to share with him my Clear the Way Detoxification Program.

I explained to him the role of the gut in our immune function and the need for the liver to be supported. I also described the role of Vitamin D in immune function and how optimizing his diet with a low glycemic, nutrient dense eating plan could help him.

He is committed to the Clear the Way Detoxification Program for three months.  I felt such gratitude to be able to help a person in need who has struggled to find solutions to his significant health challenge.

This is why I do what I do. Every day I am able to guide someone on their health journey. We need more voices communicating this message.
